Munim Zafar Khan inaugurates NICU at Alkhidmat and Orangi Hospital

Alkhidmat Karachi has reopened the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Orangi Hospital after renovation. The inauguration was conducted yesterday by Ameer, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Munim Zafar Khan.
The event was also addressed by Executive Director, Alkhidmat Karachi, Rashid Qureshi, Director, Alkhidmat Medical Services, Dr. Saqib Ansari and renowned pediatrician Dr. Azhar Chughtai. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Munim Zafar Khan congratulated the administration and hospital staff for their efforts in re-establishing a high-quality NICU at Orangi Hospital. He said this facility would provide excellent care to newborns requiring intensive treatment immediately after birth. Alkhidmat is offering affordable and quality services and is active in education, healthcare, clean water, and other sectors. Its mission is that no individual should be deprived of medical treatment due to a lack of money. He further stated that while Alkhidmat is an NGO, providing quality healthcare and education is primarily the state’s responsibility. When the state fulfills this duty, societies progress and prosper. If the state fails, situations like today arise. Alkhidmat continues to serve people with integrity, and he expressed hope that the addition of modern facilities in Alkhidmat hospitals will continue. Executive Director Rashid Qureshi said Orangi Hospital has a significant historical value. He emphasized the commitment to equipping hospitals with the latest facilities and appreciated the contributions of the Director of Health Services, doctors, and staff. Dr. Saqib Ansari stated that Alkhidmat’s hospitals are intended for the lower-middle-class population who seek treatment with dignity. The Orangi NICU will be developed as a model unit. He highlighted that institutions are built by individuals, and people’s trust over decades is linked with Alkhidmat hospitals. Orangi Hospital treats 500,000 patients annually, and all Alkhidmat hospitals together serve 2 million patients each year. He noted that Alkhidmat is providing top-quality treatment services and is expanding its scope. Renowned pediatrician and NICU in-charge at Alkhidmat Orangi Hospital, Dr. Azhar Chughtai, said a large area like Orangi needed a dedicated NICU. Although a NICU previously existed, it has now been renovated. He mentioned that the first NICU was established 20 years ago in Nazimabad, followed by Gulshan-e-Hadeed. The Orangi NICU will have 24-hour doctor availability, enabling local residents to access treatment nearby. Skilled and trained staff will be on hand. He also shared that hospitals in Orangi, Nazimabad, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed will be interconnected. Pediatric specialists and neonatologists should adopt telemedicine, as is done worldwide, so that the NICU in Gulshan-e-Hadeed can evaluate and advise on the treatment required for newborns arriving at Orangi. He concluded that this will be a major healthcare facility for the people of Orangi, from which they will greatly benefit.
